Rebay’s violin and guitar sonatas occupy a special place in Rebay’s extensive production on account of their innate quality, establishing expansive, lyrical, refined and rounded dialogues between both instruments. This sonata opens with a march that is solemn in nature and has a certain Mahlerian, decadent feel. The second movement is a monumental set of variations on a German folk song which unfolds through the circle of fifths as the instruments keep up a constant dialogue. The shortness of the frenetic scherzo and its accompanying trio underlines the second movement’s central role. For the finale Rebay uses a favorite device, a moto perpetuo “a la Weber”.
This new edition is based on the autograph manuscript, housed in the Rebay Collection from the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
